This thread has brought to surface some great arguments for teaching
drawing in schools. Is it ok if I save some to pass onto those it might
matter?
Talk of computer gaming industry etc. I am reminded of a student of mine
during my history practicum as a candidate teacher. The student is quite
protective of his sketchbook from teachers. I luckily had a moment with
him and was given permission to look at the page he had opened on his
desk, instead of history work. There were drawings of mechanical robots
etc comic book surreal etc. repetitions of the same or similar character
he was working on.
He scoffed at my asking him if he did attend art classes at the school. He
did NOT attend art classes.
My assoc. teacher saw him as a student in a world of his own, unreachable.
His academic studies suffered.
I thought just as mentioned here and to myself that if he followed his
interest into computer gaming industry he could one day be a millionaire,
besides not attending to history studies. lol.
But, also, what a shame it was that he did not want to attend art classes.
I did not get a chance to inquire further from him, but I did attend the
art program at the school, and it was unlikely that his interest would
have been supported there or in any program in the region. It would be
good to listen to this, and take a lead from it, I think.
