I think the word "hacking" in this story is a bit of an exaggeration.
Most mobile phones these days have the same way to pick up answerphone
messages when you don't have you're phone on you. If it's not set up
right, the default pin number is the same across all phones provided by
that mobile phone operator.
It's hardly rocket science to wait for someone else's answer phone to
kick in and then type 1234.
