The Department of Performing Arts at the University of San Francisco invites
applications for a tenure-track position in Dance for the Performing Arts
and Social Justice Major at the Assistant Professor level to begin in the of
Fall of 2010. We seek a candidate who is involved in creative and scholarly
research, with interests in social justice issues as they relate to current
dialogues in dance and scholarship.
Applicants should possess experience and willingness to work in a culturally
diverse environment, an ability to contribute to a young, innovative,
expanding performing arts program in a liberal arts setting, and an
understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the Department and
the University.
Teaching Responsibilities: The Department offers a major in Performing Arts
and Social Justice (PASJ,) with either a Dance or a Theater emphasis.
Responsibilities of Faculty include teaching eight credit hours per semester
with an additional four credit hours every fourth semester. The candidate
will be expected to teach major courses that integrate the mission of the
Department (see below) to course work in her/his own area of specialization,
lecture-based courses for the minor and CORE curriculum, and studio courses
in contemporary dance.
Other Responsibilities include:
*Contributing to ongoing curriculum development, administration and
governance within the department, and university
*Coordinating and directing student/faculty concerts, choreographing theater
and dance productions, mentoring student productions, advising and
recruiting students
*Actively participating in the field at large through on-going innovative
research in dance theory and practice
Qualifications: We seek an individual involved in creative work as a
choreographer in contemporary dance with research work in the areas of Dance
and Social Justice. A key requirement for this position is the ability to
practice and discuss dance simultaneously as embodied knowledge, performance
and cultural language. Ideally we seek an individual who is engaged in
development of choreographic works and contemporary technical training as
well as an interest in scholarly research and publication. The candidate
should possess a PhD or MFA by the start of appointment, and substantial
professional experience. Previous academic experience with undergraduate
dance students, curriculum development, and an interest in developing
collaborative creative work and pedagogy across Performing Arts disciplines
is required, as is the commitment to teach within a Liberal Arts setting.
