Dear all,
CIRIA are currently scoping out a potential project to produce good practice
guidance covering the issues encountered with landfill sites and other waste
management facilities situated in close proximity to the coast.
Several sites have been highlighted to us, which have contamination issues,
combined with coastal erosion risk, and which in time could result in breach of
existing barriers and wash-out of pollutants into the marine environment.
It is thought that through PartIIA and with the preparation of the second
round of Shoreline Management Plans in progress in England and Wales, a
number of new sites could emerge as potential problem areas.
It is proposed that the guidance document would address the issues
surrounding eroding eroding coastal landfill sites and lay down good practice
for how they should be dealt with in terms of engineering, environmental and
regulatory approaches.
At this stage, CIRIA would welcome input from members on any such sites
they have encountered and the approaches that they have taken.
Needless to say, we will also be undertaking a fundraising programme for this
study, so any expressions of interest would be welcomed (including
contributions-in-kind).
Please direct all responses to myself at [log in to unmask]
Many thanks
