In the context of an exhibition, exploring potential outcomes of Ireland’s economic crisis, Belfast Exposed Photography is hosting a public discussion, trying to get beyond the headlines towards a better understanding of the circumstances behind last month’s intimidation of Romanian families in south Belfast. Seven speakers will each give a 3 minute response to the situation, followed by questions and contributions from the wider audience. The discussion will cover a range of contexts, including local political trends, national Border and Immigration policy, employment law and the right to work, alongside local social and economic insecurities and responses from the media, from officialdom as well as from artists and activists and the public at large.
Confirmed speakers so far are: Daniel Jewesbury and Susanne Bosch, featured artists in The Prehistory of the Crisis (2); Chris Gilligan, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of the West of Scotland, Paula Bradshaw, Director of the Greater Village Regeneration Trust, Daire Murphy, an employment legal advisor based at the Belfast Office of Law Centre NI, Buster Cox, an immigration legal advisor based at the Belfast Office of Law Centre, and Kevin Bean, Lecturer at the Institute of Irish Studies, Liverpool University.
All welcome. This event is free.
