Archives and auteurs – Filmmakers and their archives
University of Stirling, 2nd – 4th September 2009
Archives and auteurs is a conference examining the ways in which the study
of the archives of filmmakers and the film industry can provide new
perspectives and insights into the history of cinema.
There will be panels devoted to archival issues reporting on current projects
and examining the challenges of creating and collecting film archives. Other
panels will present archival research on a variety of topics including
collaboration and authorship; Ingmar Bergman’s archival legacy; the cinema
authorship of Lindsay Anderson; the role of the producer; the transition from
script to screen; and new insights into British cinema history.
There will also be screenings, discussions and a major exhibition of material
from the University of Stirling’s Lindsay Anderson Archive. A recent addition to
the conference programme is a special screening of Hitchcock on Grierson, a
1965 STV tribute to the ‘father of documentary’ from the ‘master of suspense’
which will be shown at the Changing Room Gallery as part of a private view of
the exhibition ‘Art is not a mirror, it’s a hammer!’, an exploration of the
archives of John Grierson and Norman McLaren.
