Identifying prints
What process is it and how is it done?
17–18 September
A two day seminar and workshop explaining and demonstrating the range of
printing processes – relief, intaglio and planographic, in black and white and
colour. The course will focus on a wide range of printed ephemera as well as
fine art print making, illustration and reproduction. The course is particularly
aimed at librarians, archivists, curators and
social historians who need help with print identification for describing,
cataloguing and evaluating. The course will give an historical perspective,
concentrating mainly on the nineteenth century.
Day one
Handling and observing prints through the lens with illustrated introductory
talks and a chance to handle printing plates, wood-engraving blocks and
lithographic stones. Examples will be drawn from the Department’s extensive
collections and from the Centre of Ephemera Studies. The expectation is that
by the end of the day delegates will be able to identify, woodcut/wood-
engraving, copper and steel engraving, etching, aquatint, mezzotint, various
kinds of lithography, gravure, collotype and many other lesser known
processes.
Day two
The delegates will have the opportunity to try out tools, materials and
techniques used in making printing surfaces. This will be accompanied by
demonstrations of relief, intaglio and lithographic printing using our historical
presses and printing from period plates, blocks, stones and type. Delegates
will also be able to take prints themselves and have the opportunity to print
using a replica of the Gutenberg press which recently featured in a
documentary presented by Stephen Fry.
