** Moving forwards with Name Authorities and Indexing **
The National Archives Network (NAN) is a group of archives professionals in the UK working towards
increased interoperability, through sharing experiences and expertise and promoting best practice.
The Network is currently undergoing a re-evaluation of its remit and role. If you would like to be
involved please contact: Dr Melinda Haunton (TNA): [log in to unmask] or
Jane Stevenson (Archives Hub): [log in to unmask]
The Name Authorities Working Group of the National Archive Network (NAN) is looking at how we can
better promote best practice in the creation of indexes and authority records and how we can
progress the creation and sharing of authority records.
We have created this questionnaire to gauge the extent to which catalogues are indexed, and
authority records are compiled, within UK Archives. It is aimed at archivists working in all
sectors. Its findings will help facilitate data sharing between systems and services, including
individual repositories, the strands of the NAN and the National Register of Archives, and enable
the proper implementation of mapping and other technologies. Your feedback will also enable the NAN
to recommend improvements to training and best practice.
We realise that it takes time out of a busy day to complete a survey like this, but without this
information, we cannot really progress this important work, which will benefits the whole archive
community.
Location of the questionnaire: http://www.archiveshub.ac.uk/archivesnetwork.html
[The questionnaire is hosted on the Archives Hub site, but it is not in any way tied to the Hub.]
The closing date for completion is the end of September 2009.
Note: We are very happy to receive submissions from multiple archivists at the same repository;
almost all questions are optional; comments can be given; it is perfectly valid to respond saying
that you are not clear about what the question is asking, or do not really know the answer.
Many thanks,
Jane Stevenson, on behalf of
The Name Authorities Working Group of the National Archive Network
