ESRC funded PhD Studentship
Ref:
Closes 18th September 2009
School of Geography
Human Geographies of Life, Risk and Security
A three year fully-funded postgraduate studentship is available within the School of Geography, University of Exeter (Streatham Campus) commencing in October 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The successful candidate will develop an independent topic which addresses current issues relating to life, risk and security. The topic for the PhD can be broadly defined but should address issues which relate to biosecurity, human, animal and/or plant health. Students may seek to develop topics which address current academic interest in one or more of the following: food, agriculture, health, disease, environmental sustainability, human-nonhuman relations. They may wish to focus their study on one or more of the following conceptual approaches: critical human geography, cultural geography, material politics, science, technology and society (STS), body politics, new biogeographies, biopower and biopolitics.
The studentship is linked to an ESRC-funded project entitled Biosecurity Borderlands, so preference will be given to students who can devise a research topic which compliments and/or extends (rather than reproduces) that project. The latter explores the interfaces between biosecurity and other concerns, including workers’ health and safety, food safety, security, and cultures and wildlife conservation practices.
The PhD will be jointly supervised by Professor Steve Hinchliffe (University of Exeter) and Dr Nick Bingham (Open University).
The successful candidate will be expected to:
* engage with current theory and practice in human geography and related academic disciplines including STS and Sociology;
* develop an empirical investigation (nationally or internationally) on a topic which broadly relates to life, risk and security.
To apply, you should meet the eligibility and residence requirements for an ESRC +3 PhD. Applicants should have completed or be near to completing an ESRC approved social sciences training qualification at Masters level or equivalent. UK/EU level fees will be paid, together with a maintenance grant that matches the standard ESRC rate (for 2009/10 this will be £13,290). Please send a copy of your CV, with the names and addresses of three referees, plus a brief three page statement outlining your research topic, to Laura Taylor at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Previous applicants for the post advertised in June will also be considered for this studentship. There is therefore no need to re-apply.
For further information, or informal discussion about the position, please contact one of the project supervisors: Professor Steve Hinchliffe ([log in to unmask]); or Dr Nick Bingham ([log in to unmask]).
Closing date for completed applications is 18th September 2009. Interviews are expected to take place in late September.
