The carrot story arose from the fact that some extremely low activity radioactive waste (some overalls from a nearby nuclear facility if I recall correctly) that were landfilled there. By a long shot, this waste was a minor issue on site (relatively speaking).

However, when the local paper got wind of it, they ran a story (front page I believe) that devoted some inches to a drawing of a giant glowing carrot. I would consider that a great example of scaremongering...

No offence taken. I'm a Leeds fan so I'm used to being heavily mocked anyway but we did outplay Blackburn on Saturday and it was actually red hot and sunny in Leeds too, so anything is possible. (1-1, Blackburn equalised with a last minute penalty, grrr)

Interestingly, from memory, Pride Park was absolutely riddled with Blue Billy which is particularly nasty stuff. Spent Cyanide Oxide that likes to mop up sulphides too - not good for concrete design. There were some particularly nasty areas and I think this lead to the mutant carrot stories (although I don't remember that, I had only just moved here at that point).

It is interesting how the press can make a remediation job a little more difficult on occasions because of the slightly misinformed and slightly scaremongering stories. A bit like the Cinderhill Tarpits where continued campaigns induce a certain notoriety. I wonder if anyone has had their remediation plans interfered with merely by the press offering 'news' to the public. If so how does this all tied in with the libel thing? Can the press be sued for misinformation? (I suppose it is difficult to separate) I'm not saying it is wrong to report news, it is when is escalates into creative reporting it becomes a major problem for the site developers, engineers and the rest of us.

Pride Park is 'fine' (TM) - note the days of giant radioactive carrots appearing on the local newspaper are long gone......

Hello

No, I hadn't heard of it particularly although it was in the murky background somewhere as an example. Although I live in Derby which means I am surrounded by toxic waste, majority of it plays at Pride Park.

I mentioned earlier that a film title of Carry on Remediating (with Bernard Breslaw and Charles Haughtrey in charge of the JCB) would be marvellous. Reading the website I see hookers, deep filled holes, backfilling, seepage and many other phrases to make Sid James cackle. I'll leave it there as I am sure we could be here all day although I am sure somebody has already come up with a list of CL innuendo.

As it goes it is actually quite interesting too.

Cheers

Russell

The 'Love Canal'.

Is anyone else finding this rather hilarious? (Sorry Chris/Paul)

Or is it just me being puerile and base?

I shall look further into the love canal.... just the thing for a Monday morning. ;)
