The Arabic Papyrology Webclass (Fall Semester 2009): Petitions to and
Letters from Mamluk Officials (13th–16th c)
Petitions to and letters from Mamluk officials allow us a unique
insight in the realities of Mamluk administration: the hardships and
desires of those ruled, the legitimation and self-perception of the
bureaucracy, and the complex relationships in between these two
worlds. Due to the high stylistic level of the documents, we will have
to take into account the rules of inshaʾ literature.
This is an on-line webclass. During each two or three sessions, an
unpublished document from the Vienna Collection is to be read. A scan
of the document will be sent to you in advance. Estimated time for
preparation: 1-2 hours/week. Communication will be in English.
Requirements: A computer (download); internet access; earphones;
microphone (internal or external). Communication will be through Skype
and your browser. No installation of special fonts is required.
Duration: Fall semester 2009: 21 September - 19 December 2008; Monday,
16-18 h Swiss time (time might be changed)
Registration: through www.ori.uzh.ch/apw.
Registration deadline: 15 August 2009 (register soon–the webclass
