Climate change, housing and fuel poverty are key political issues. But do we
know how to provide affordable housing which simultaneously accords with the
Government’s climate change targets? Examples that meet these competing
needs are hard to find.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS INCLUDE
Professor Richard Wilkinson’s groundbreaking book 'The Spirit Level:Why more
equal societies almost always do better', goes to the heart of the apparent
contradiction between the material success and social failings of many
modern societies. Richard will examine the links between structural
inequalities, climate change and sustainability.
Rob Hopkins, co Founder Transition Network, winner Observer Ethical Awards
2009. Rob will examine the challenge of climate change and the role of
communities in addressing this.
Professor Colin Porteous is an architect and academic with a long research
involvement in tackling environmental problems associated with housing. His
prime concern has been to tackle fuel poverty by means of renewable,
low-carbon solutions.
Dr Noel Olson is an independent public health physician and will speak on
energy efficiency and the health impacts of fuel poverty.
Cathy McCormick (author, The Wee Yellow Butterfly) has a long history in
anti-poverty and campaigns for better housing conditions. She will discuss
the experience and health of living in poor housing and fuel poverty.
