The role of exercise and sport in recovery from problem drug use
Applications are sought for a unique inter-disciplinary PhD that will explore the
role of exercise and sport in recovery from problem drug use. The research will
use mixed methods; primarily qualitative research involving in-depth interviews
with male and female recovering drug users. This will be combined with
quantitative measures of physical activity, fitness, health and wellbeing.
Analyses and developed exercise models will be framed within both the
sociological literature on recovery from problem drug use and the basic
biological and physiological impact of drug taking on bodily functioning in the
short-, medium- and longer-term. The student will work across both Schools,
accessing relevant in-house seminars, conferences and training. This is an
exciting opportunity to become part of a dynamic and rapidly developing cross-
university programme of research on exercise and drug use.
