The newly established Interdisciplinary Centre for Urban Culture and
Public Spaces (SKuOR), based in the Faculty of Architecture and Planning
at University of Technology-Vienna, is organising its first European
September Academy (20-27 September 2009).
The programme is offered to 30 postgraduate students (bachelor and PhD
exceptionally possible) in Human Geography, Architecture, Planning,
Urban design, Urban Sociology, Arts as well as other spatially relevant
disciplines.
The 2009 topic is "Intraurban cultural exchange and the urban periphery:
Breathing your city through the lungs of your fellow citizen's
neighbourhood".
Working with local communities, artists, city council planning
authorities and several tutors (professors) within social housing
estates, participants in the European September Academy will produce a
toolkit of playful ideas - space plays and playing space - inspired by
spatial research theory as well as by spatial planning practice. The
toolkit will be presented as an exhibition based on plays and games
that should ideally comprise a set of very different, fresh and
game-based spatial strategies stimulating future processes of the
cultural production of public spaces in the urban periphery.
Language: English
Credits: min. 3 ECTS
Each student has to pay for his/her own accommodation and travel
expenses. A provisional Hostel reservation for students has been made.
Price is approx. 30 euro/night.
*Posts for geography students are limited to 5.*

For submitting your application (for geography students): send an email
of interest *as soon as possible* and a short one-page statement of
motivation to Dr. Chiara Tornaghi, mail: [log in to unmask]
<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by the *6th July 2009*.
We are particularly interested in why exactly you are interested in the
special topic of the European September Academy (see Concept Paper
on-line) and in the general contents of the SKuOR (see SKuOR profile
on-line) and what abilities and experiences you want to bring in during
the course of the September Academy. As we will be working with people
coming from different ethnical backgrounds, additional skills in
Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian, Turkish or in other languages are
considered warmly welcome, yet they are not considered a precondition
for your participation.
