Hello Penny. I too was sorry to hear about the passing of Professor
Helman - I never had the opportunity to meet him but always included his
book in recommended reading lists for students.
Re Mary Seacole: thanks for publicising the announcement that Martin
Jennings has been chosen as the artist who will design the Mary Seacole
Memorial - some of you may have seen his statue of John Betjeman at St
Pancras Station.
Now we just need tor raise the outstanding £400,000 in order to reach
the target required by the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal. Here's
a useful link if you would like to consider making a donation online:

Finally, on Monday there will be an unveiling of a newly discovered
photograph of Mary Seacole - fantastic timing methinks!
Best wishes
Elizabeth

Subject: Mary Seacole statue chosen
Dear All
I was so pleased to hear the news yesterday that Martin Jennings
statue has been chosen to commemorate Mary Seacole and trust the same
care will be taken over the words that go with it. I have cut and
pasted below from a news item. Then I was so sorry to hear that Cecil
Helman had died as I attended one of his short courses a few years ago.
It was from him I learned the
seemingly-simple-but-actually-hard-for-many-clinicians-to-do principle
of asking and listening to patients about why and how they think they
have become ill, how long they believe they will be unwell and how they
can become well again. I have huge respect for him and all his energy
and curiosity. He leaves a great legacy.
"The design for a memorial statue dedicated to the nurse and
Crimean War heroine Mary Seacole has been chosen.
Artist Martin Jennings created the winning sculpture, which will
stand in the grounds of St Thomas' Hospital in central London.
The Jamaican-born nurse was voted the greatest Black Briton of
all time in a poll in 2004. The statue is expected to be erected at its
London location by the end of 2010 or early 2011. "
Kind regards
