Poverty Migration and Media Campaigns in Scotland

Following the award of an AHRC Collaborative PhD Studentship, the
University of Stirling in partnership with OXFAM Scotland is seeking
to appoint a suitably qualified applicant for a doctoral studentship
for three years commencing October 1st, 2009 or as soon as possible
thereafter.
This project intends to examine how media campaigns (in the broadest
sense) which address poverty and migration issues are designed,
implemented and assessed in Scotland. In so doing, it aims to provide
understanding of the interaction of media and issues of poverty and
migration, while developing a guide for best practice relating to
campaigns in this area. The studentship covers tuition fees and a
stipend for living expenses for three years. Further details at:

The Department of Film, Media & Journalism and its research arm, the
Stirling Media Research Institute, are internationally renowned,
attracting many doctoral students, visiting scholars, and
practitioners, from across the world. The Department consistently
draws high ratings for its teaching at all levels. We were ranked top
in Scotland by the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. 95% of our
research is classed as of international standard, with 70% in the top
two categories, 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'.
Applicants for this doctoral studentship should normally have, or be
studying for, a Master’s degree or similar postgraduate qualification
which should be completed by July 31st, 2009; although exceptional
candidates with other qualifications or experience will be considered.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have professional or
volunteer work experience in poverty/migration issues in the UK or
European contexts.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to produce a 1500 word essay
on the topic with the candidates’ own views and prospective input on
the project. Interviews will take place in the week commencing
September 1st 2009.
