Michael,
my 8-year old Alfa Romeo takes me everywhere I like (and quite
comfortably at that), but if I wanted to compete at Silverstone I'd
need a different car. And I know it.
I agree that Silverlight is an odd choice - for a simple zoom facility
- but hey, they may have something else in store, for which Flash is
not appropriate. We do not know. Yet. They have made a decision and
will know its pros and cons.
What we do know is that on an average site the number of people coming
with Ubuntu (or any other Linux) are, say, 0.0001% of the total. They
made a conscious decision of using a niche OS - which has limited
multimedia capabilities and a very restricted choice of plugins. So
the idea is that the remaining 99.9999% of user should never try
something else because of the choice of a very small group?
Moreover, the site is 99.9% accessible to everyone - if you want the
extra funky bits you have to download something extra. And at doing
that - the continuous zoom - I have seen no better tool than
Silverlight - it's smooth, fast and efficient. I have seen no
comparable Flash example at doing the same. Zoomify or Aleo don't come
even remotely close. I would like to be corrected as we are looking
for an alternative :-)
Best, Cristiano
