Hi David
Thanks for this, it was just the sort of thing I was hoping to hear about.
Sometimes we're guilty of spending far too much time and money on research -
which of course can be very useful, but I like this no/low cost do it yourself
and see if it works approach!
I'm sure many other museums would be interested in hearing what you've done
and what's worked. I'll do my best to flag it up in the West Midlands.
Best wishes
Linda

Re: Selling shop stock online using Ebay, Amazon, etc
All
We have had an Amazon bookstore for second-hand books for 6 months or so,
and we have generated almost £1000 in turnover. We are regularly given
interesting books, and previously they were sold for £2 or so. Using Amazon,
we are getting the real-world value, as we are selling books alongside lots of
other people. We are also using this to sell our own publications too. We have
gone for the no-cost option, the disadvantage is that I can't link direct from
our site to the copy of the book that we are selling - it goes to the 'Home
Page' of the book where people can choose which supplier to purchase from.
See our storefront at
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/shops/storefront/index.html?
ie=UTF8&marketplaceID=A1F83G8C2ARO7P&sellerID=A1ZVPAIUFN2IOB
which, as you can see, is another disadvantage!!!!
I looked at ABEbooks, but you have to pay £20 a month or so ...
We have also just added Google Checkout to our site - and are selling our
new 'Developing Devizes' DVD online. The DVD was launched at the beginning
of June - and we sold have 60 copies so far in the shop, and just one online.
We have now started adding Google Checkout to other shop items, and will
have to see how it goes. The advantage is that you just pay a % on sales (no
upfront costs), the disadvantage is that our items are not in a larger
marketplace, so we can only easily sell to visitors to our site. It is easy to
embed the code on the website.
The page for the DVD on our site embedded clips from YouTube, and has a
Google Checkout link - this means that you can buy more than one thing at a
time (that would be nice!).

I have tried selling stuff on eBay - using the Missionfish non-profit route, but
we don't have the sorts of things that are likely to sell there at the moment. If
we had the right product, then this would be easy as well.
So far our online sales activity has cost us £0 ...

We have just co-published a new book on the History of Chippenham and
did look at selling it on-line, but the complexity of taking orders &
payment seemed to baffle our finance department. The other co-publisher
also looked into it but is was more cost effective to go through the
bookshops already on there - and who we would be competing with anyway -
so we just take the royalties.
A very small fraction of the photographs held by Wiltshire Council are
available to browse and purchase through their online shop

Wiltshire Heritage Museum and Salisbury Museum advertise their shop
stock online but you can only purchase by post
