In response to Alan's posting, Lancashire are also looking at the same issues. The general twitter account (and other centralised social networking accounts here) are currently maintained partly by the library systems and web team, and also by the new information services team, but enthusiastic individuals in some libraries are also tweeting and developing facebook and myspace sites in a slightly uncoordinated way. The debate is - how far 'support provision' should go, and how to maintain a balance between encouraging and enabling local staff and libraries to tweet etc freely, and ensuring standards of service are maintained across new territories outside the traditional control of corporate centralisation. A strategic approach is desirable but it must not stifle innovation, one of the core Web 2.0 characteristics.

Subject: Who's twittering?
After seeing the recent list of libraries who twitter, I would be
interested to find out who in the library service is maintaining the
tweets (and the same goes to some extent for facebook etc). Is it the
systems person, a specialist post, interested staff members, or a group
of people. I suspect it varies from organisation to organisation.
In our organisation we have a number of staff who are keen to develop
some library web 2 prescence and I think that it should probably be
those people that perhaps take the lead on this, if we can spare their
time from other duties, with the systems team providing support if
necessary. I was wondering if other organisations have gone down this
route.
