In case anyone else had difficulty with the broken link in Alan's posting, it refers to the following notice in the BL's "Readers' Bulletin", summer
2001:
"The library does not have a formal dress code for readers, but we ask you to observe a reasonable standard of dress. During the summer months, we ask you to wear shoes and tops at all times and if you wear shorts, they should be appropriate for work rather than for the beach or sports."

I was wondering whether I could easily turn up an article on inappropriately dressed librarians. I am sure we have all seen a few of these.
Instead I found this report from the Times Higher Education 24 August

The only inappropriate dress I remember seeing is the young lad wearing a heavy overcoat in the height of summer. I thought nothing more of it but it turned out he was selling drugs at the back of the library...

just think how dull it would be if they all appeared in sober suits. Let em have their time as young people who want to experiment, because time is short and they may grow up to be librarians and take a dim view of street fashion and youthful abandoness!

Yes, I think we should be pleased enough to see the students using the library and not outside sunning themselves!

The only thing offensive is this attitude to the public that still seems to prevail in certain institutions.
Personally I look forward to the warmer weather in Tottenham and the chance to see inappropriately dressed students studying and using our facilities.
