Dear all, with apologies for cross-posting (get it more than four times and you deserve a prize...)
As information professionals, we have a responsibility to not let the accepted wisdom of our age go thoughtlessly unchallenged:
1) Men cannot multitask. Rubbish. For the record, I'm currently avoiding doing eight things. Simultaneously.
2) Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. Dubious. I far prefer Linda Smith's assertion that men are from Mars, women are from Thorntons.
3) When reading a list, people will only get as far as the third point and then get bored, stop reading and do something else. Crossing my fingers against that one...
4) No decent jobs come up over the summer. Ha!
Full details of this can be found from http://www.rcseng.ac.uk/about/working/ ; if you'd like to see the ad in a fetching blue, try http://www.jobs.ac.uk/jobs/QV274/Information_Resources_Librarian/
Information Resources Librarian, The Royal College of Surgeons of England
Band E - £24-25,000 (full-time) (Fixed term contract to 31st March 2011 in the first instance)
We are looking to appoint an information specialist to join us in the management and development of the NHS Evidence - surgery, anaesthesia, perioperative and critical care specialist collection (www.library.nhs.uk/theatres<http://www.library.nhs.uk/theatres>), and to work within the College library to provide high quality information services for our audiences.
As Information Resources Librarian, you will be one of a team of three information specialists responsible for identifying, organising, sharing and promoting content and evidence-based approaches within the above areas of practice. This involves working with clinical partners and topic specialists, and contributing to the national NHS Evidence (www.evidence.nhs.uk<http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/>) programme. You will also play a part in the College's provision of information resources and support to underpin surgical education, training, research and policy-making.
You will have a first degree or postgraduate qualification in Librarianship/Information Studies or recognised equivalent, and at least one year's experience in information work, preferably in a health setting. You will demonstrate excellent information skills - resource discovery, searching and appraisal, organising content - as well as the ability to work in project-type situations, contributing to their planning, delivery and direction. You will be someone who can work both independently and collaboratively in a team context, and think and act innovatively. You can assimilate and share knowledge effectively, with an understanding of and enthusiasm for the web environment, and you will have the confidence to work and engage directly with different groups of people.
(And then some HR stuff.)
Closing date is Friday 17th July, with interviews to be held on Wednesday 29th July. Please pass this on if you think someone else might be interested. If you'd like to ask any questions informally - such as "Why is it only fixed term in the first instance and what are the implications of that?" - feel free to get in touch with me.
Tom.
