Meeting: "Developing the "swine flu" information literacy build"
Where: Second Life (SL), the virtual world, on Infolit iSchool
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Infolit%20iSchool/183/184/22/
(you need the SL viewer installed and a SL avatar)
When: Thursday 4 June 2009, 12noon - 1pm SL Time (this is 8-9pm UK time)
I developed a 3D version of the SCONUL 7 Pillars model of information literacy,
and for some time there has been a copy of this which has examples from a
problem-based information literacy exercise "Should we panic about bird flu?"
I am now developing a variant, so that people could use it in SL to provoke
discussion and problem solving around issues to do with **swine flu**.
I am asking for people's help in identifying specific swine-flu-related problems
and questions that would be suitable for information literacy activities, and
suggestions for material that could be used with the various Pillars.
Please come along on the 4th to contribute ideas, or (if you are skilled in SL)
objects, posters etc! NB I am NOT trying to create another resource to link to
lots of information about Swine Flu, the focus is on thinking about questions
and problems and what learners need to think about relevant to each of the 7
Pillars. Note that the 7 Pillars model was developed by the Society for
College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) and more information can be
found at
http://www.sconul.ac.uk/groups/information_literacy/seven_pillars.html
If you can't come along on the 4th, there will be more opportunities to
contribute ideas (email me or IM me in SL as Sheila Yoshikawa). If you go to
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Infolit%20iSchool/183/184/22/, this will take you
to the Swine Flu build (or just look for the luminous pink flying pig)
This is part of the University of Sheffield Centre for Information Literacy
Research discussion series.
