Dear all
The CILIP Policy Forum comprises representatives
of all the CILIP home nations, branches and
special interest groups. It is concerned with
looking at the areas of policy concern raised for
CILIP from the spheres of interest of the home
nations, branches and groups, from initiatives or
developments arising across the UK in libraries,
government agenda etc, and from areas of concern
identified within CILIP Council. The Policy
Forum, broadly speaking, uses a series of task
and finish groups to work on identified issues
and to present draft policy to the Forum for
debate and decision - which is then recommended to Council.
The Policy Forum is seeking to elect a deputy to
the Chair of the forum. Two policy forum members
have come forward and so there is to be a
vote. As your representative on PF, I need to
cast the vote for ELG by Wednesday 10th June.
The two candidates are Monica Anderton and Peter
Beauchamp. I would be grateful - if you have any
strong views on this - if you would let me know
your preference so that my vote on your behalf
can be as representative as possible of ELG preference.
Please see the statements by Peter and Monica, below.
Thanks

PETER BEAUCHAMP
I am putting myself forward to be Deputy Chair of the Forum.
After 25 years in Government when I tried to help
CILIP (and the then Library Association) behind
the scenes but could rarely be seen to do so
publicly, I served on the old Council for 3 years
and was Vice-chair of the Policy Development
Committee. I recall arguing in Council against
the proposed structure of the Policy Forum in
that we appeared to be transferring many of the
problems of the old Council to it. Sadly, this has proved the case.
Before tackling these problems, it seems to me that
§ some continuity in the leadership of the
Policy Forum would be helpful, especially to the
Vice President who only serves as Chair for one year; and,
§ anyway, the Chair needs some focussed
support during the year in order to take forward the business of the day.
I am prepared to set aside time to help the Forum
and my starting point is simple. We have an
amazing pool of talent in the Policy Forum and we
need to make better use of it.

MONICA ANDERTON
I am Monica Anderton from NECILIP and I currently
represent the North East on the Policy Forum. Up
to the time CILIP Council was reconstituted I was
the NECILIP Councillor. Going even further
back before CILIP was born I was actively
involved with the Institute of Information
Scientists and was a member of the IIS Policy &
Planning Committee for several years, so I have
experience in this area. The Chair has asked for
help behind the scenes to some extent and I’m
good at that; it is usually preferable to public
speaking - though I can do that when necessary.
I’m not renowned for my diplomacy and tact and
tend to be a bit blunt, but find this is usually
effective. I am a good administrator and
organiser. (Maybe I missed my calling and instead
of being an Information Scientist – the emphasis
on Science - should have been a PA!). I am more
than willing to put further hard work into the
Institute because I think it has lost its way a
bit, and if I can help to get it back on track,
I’ll be very pleased. I understand that we have
no specific brief for this post, and that it
could be for six months only until the end of
this year, or could be for longer.
