Subject: OII News [2009.06.09]: OxIS, Social Media, Visitors, Webcasts, Students
Dear friends and colleagues,
As Oxford's summer term draws to a close, we'd like to draw your attention to details of an exciting new event we have planned for the autumn. Kicking off a series of events which will mark the 40th anniversary of the Internet, we are collaborating with the Oxford Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Said Business School to hold the Oxford Social Media Convention on 18 September 2009. This day long conference will bring together key bloggers, thought-leaders, academics and commentators to consider the evolution, impact and potential of social media such as blogs and Twitter. Speakers already confirmed include Dave Sifry (Founder and Chairman of Technorati), Cory Doctorow (Co-Editor, Boing-Boing), Richard Sambrook (Director, BBC Global News Division) and Iain Dale (author of Iain Dale's Diary). You can find further details in the Events Diary below; please register with mailto:[log in to unmask] if you would like to reserve a place.
Now that the graduate studies admissions process for 2009/10 has been completed we are also pleased to announce that we have received a record number of applications, with the new MSc programme proving particularly popular. Overall, more than 120 applications were received, and we have made offers of 15 places for the MSc Programme, and six for the DPhil programme. The application process for 2010/11 entry opens in October.

We are also delighted to announce that two of our incoming students have been offered prestigious Clarendon awards by the University of Oxford. These awards, which are made on the basis of academic merit are extremely competitive.
Best wishes,
Victoria Nash,
Policy and Research Fellow
Director of Graduate Studies

2. Richard Susskind Appointed OII Visiting Professor
--------------------------------------------------
Professor Richard Susskind, OBE is to take up a part-time three-year appointment as Visiting Professor in Internet Studies at the OII, starting immediately.
A pioneer in the field of information technology and law, Professor Susskind is currently a professor at the Law School of Strathclyde University and IT Adviser to the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales. He is Emeritus Law professor at Gresham College in London, where he was also appointed Honorary Professor in 2004, the first in over 400 years. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a past chairman of the Society for Computers and Law, and, from 2003 to 2008, he chaired the Advisory Panel on Public Sector Information, as set up by the Cabinet Office.
OII Director, Professor William Dutton, said: "I am delighted that Richard will be taking up this post. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Oxford Internet Institute in 2000, working with Andrew Graham, Master of Balliol, and he has served on our Advisory Board since its establishment in 2002. This appointment will enable him to be even more central to the major themes of the Institute, focusing on the societal implications of the Internet and related ICTs. Moreover, his expertise in the impact of ICTs on legal practice and other professions will extend our work in important ways."
Professor Susskind said: "I am honoured to have been appointed. The OII is a world class institution that systematically addresses the most important social questions of the internet age. It is an ideal academic home for me."

3. OxIS 2009 Report: Launched on 22 June 2009
--------------------------------------------------
In February and March this year the Oxford Internet Survey (OxIS) 2009 data were collected. Over 2000 British people participated in the survey, which consisted of separate questionnaires for users, ex-users and non-users as well as a self-completion section for those questions that people might be less comfortable answering face-to-face.
This fourth wave of data (earlier waves having been collected in 2003, 2005 and 2007) has shown interesting developments in relation to people's online social and commercial activities, the quality of people's online experience, mobility of ICT use, and reasons for disengagement from technologies.
The OxIS 2009 Report will be launched at the Houses of Parliament on 22 June 2009. Sponsors and invited speakers will talk about the relevance of OxIS data for commerce, policy and academic research. The launch event is now fully booked; however, the report will be available for download from the OxIS website on the day:
http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/microsites/oxis/
Thank you for your interest and support of OxIS so far: we hope you will continue to collaborate with us in making this the best available study on the use and non-use of the Internet in Britain.

Survey Research Fellow

4. Latest from Fairtracing: Supporting Ethical Trade
--------------------------------------------------
The aim of Dr Ian Brown's Fair Tracing project is to support Ethical Trade by implementing IT Tracking and Tracing Technologies in supply chains to provide consumers and producers with enhanced information. The project team was in Doha (Qatar) last month to present work on 'Understanding the provenance of ethically produced goods' at the International Conference on Information and Communication (ICTD2009: http://www.ictd2009.org/)
Project manager Dr Dorothea Kleine was also at the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development to demonstrate some prototype systems that provide ethical consumers with information on the social and environmental impact of products. You can see some of these systems yourself (tracing the journeys taken by Chilean wine and Indian Coffee from source to final distribution point) at the project website: http://www.fairtracing.org/
Papers and presentations are also available on the website.

Marcelo Thompson has just published an article in PoliTICs, a publication of NUPEF, the research arm of the Brazilian Information Network for the Third Sector (http://www.rits.org.br/). The article focuses on the future of the Brazilian PKI in light of a soon to come electronic national identity for all Brazilian citizens:
Identity, Capacity and Totality: Rethinking the Boundaries of Personhood in Brazil [PDF, 380kb]
http://www.politics.org.br/downloads/poliTICS_n3_Marcelo%20Thompson.pdf
He also has an article in the Brazilian newspaper 'O Globo' focusing on the paradox of the so-called 'principle of impersonality' of the Brazilian Public Administration vis-a-vis the reality of political campaigning and mobilization through the Internet. The article questions whether an initiative like MyBarackObama.com should be possible in Brazil, as it currently is not.
