If you are not considering the actual structure of the mcq (text, difficulty etc) then it comes down to the application of knowledge by the individual candidates, Case & Swanson have done work on testwiseness in students, and their are others in the fields of educational psychology and medical education.
In summary, good students know the answers and go straight select the right one in very little time (seconds), poor students try and reason out the answers which takes longer. It depends how long you want to give he poorer students to try to work it out, which then impacts on the validity, reliability and differentiation of your assessment.

Is anyone aware of any research into the appropriate time to allow for the answering of a mcq (barring factors such as amount of text, complexity of question etc)?
I wonder how the DSA decided on the optimum time to allow for the driving theory test, they must have conducted some research on this?
