Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Leeds is introducing a new one-year MA in Advanced Chinese Studies programme from September 2009. This specialist MA is for students who have a good BA degree in Chinese Studies (Modern Standard Chinese, Putonghua) or another discipline with an equivalent level of proficiency in Modern Standard Chinese. It is aimed specifically at students who are planning to become researchers on and/or in China. It will enable them to develop the specialist academic and practical skills sets which are needed and especially to improve their Chinese linguistic competence which is so necessary for correspondence, advanced research and other relevant professions.
The students will acquire a high-level ability to critically approach sources in Chinese across relevant areas of research, to read and understand advanced Chinese texts across different disciplines and styles, to summarise and translate a range of Chinese texts into English and vice versa, and to produce relevant written and oral academic discourses in Chinese.
The training emphasises a proficient understanding of Chinese linguistic patterns and structures, an awareness of issues involved in translation between Chinese and English, a practical capability of writing Chinese texts, and an ability to identify, select and critically analyse specialised Chinese texts relevant to the students’ own area of research or interest and discuss them within the broader context of the subject.
Students will also have the opportunity to participate in regular seminars and workshops of the White Rose East Asia Centre (www.wreac.org<http://www.wreac.org>) which provides an active research environment combining the resources of the Department of East Asian Studies at Leeds and the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield.
Further information on the programme can be found at http://www.wreac.org/leeds/ma-adv-chinese or from the website of the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Leeds at http://eas.leeds.ac.uk/htdocs/eas/eas_content/home/home.asp
I’d be grateful if you could forward information about this exciting new programme to any final year students who may be interested. i'm also attaching a flyer of the programme which provides more details for your information.
With best wishes
