I agree - it's not just that food can be spilled & smeared, it's also
the food residue & grease on the hands after eating food that is
transferred to
whatever artefact the user is handling. I've come across far too many
greasy books!

Its a very sensible edict; food and drink can be spilled, smeared, etc
onto artefacts / documents, causing all manner of short and long term
problems. It may also attract insects. Besides which, a search room is
not an eatery.
