Department of Public Health and Policy,
Health Services Research Unit
Clinical Effectiveness Unit
The Royal College of Surgeons of England
The NHS is introducing patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to
make more data available on the outcome of surgical treatment. Each
year, 250,000 patients will be invited to fill in a questionnaire about
their health status before and after an elective surgical procedure.
This is the first time anywhere in the world that outcomes from the
perspective of patients are being used in a national project on the
quality of care.
We are seeking two experienced quantitative researcher who can
contribute to a national programme of research that will enhance the
value of patient-reported outcome measures as indicators of the quality
of care. It will address questions on equality, the development of
“metrics”, and linkage with other data such as the Hospital Episode
Statistics and the National Joint Registry.
Applicants must have a higher research degree (MSc for Research Fellow
or PhD for Lecturer ) and strong quantitative skills. You will be
responsible for a range of statistical analyses including risk
adjustment, development of performance indicators, continuous outcome
monitoring, and linkage with other data sources. Experience with using
advanced quantitative methods in health services research is an
advantage but not essential.
You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and
clinicians who play a leading role both nationally and internationally
in shaping and guiding large-scale evaluations of healthcare based on
patient-reported outcome measures. The posts will be based in the
Clinical Effectiveness Unit, a collaboration between the Health Services
Research Unit of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and
The Royal College of Surgeons of England.
One post is offered full-time (1.0 FTE) and one part-time (0.5 FTE),
both for 2.5 years. The salary will be on the Research Fellow scale
(£35 194 – £39 988 per annum inclusive) or Lecturer scale (£41 106 –
