In February 2009 I joined the Centre for Statistical and Survey
Methodology at the University of Wollongong, Australia. This is the
third phase of my statistical career. For my first 18 years I was a
statistician with the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This was
followed by 18 years as a statistician with the global market research
company ACNielsen.
For the last 5 of these years I was responsible for the statistical
standards for ACNielsen’s Customised business in the Asia Pacific
region and other regions.
Each year many thousands of sample surveys are conducted by Nielsen
in these regions. In reviewing some of these surveys, and in providing
statistical assistance, many sampling and analysis issues could be
addressed through reference to standard statistical resources. There
were, however, some commonly occurring practical sampling and analysis
issues, often very basic, which regularly arose but for which no
references seemed to be available from statistical resources. In this
talk some of these issues are canvassed. Most remain in need of further
exploration.
