Not one to often reply on this forum as others are so much better at formulating an
answer. However this thread brought a smile;
In medieval castles staircases with
uneven tread and rise were called 'siege steps' and were mainly used in towers
and in the initial fortifications of the castle so that the invaders tripped and then
had to move slowly to avoid doing it again while the occupants knew of the stairs
and could move much faster.
