Project title: Towards a rational design for Sustainable urban Drainage
Systems (SuDS)
Abstract: Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) are drainage methods
that take account of quantity, quality and amenity issues of drainage
systems and are designed to meet social, economic and environmental
requirements; thereby minimising the conflict that can exist between
economic development and the protection of the environment. This project
seeks to develop filtration-based SUDS adapting bespoke technologies
originally designed for low-cost water filtration systems in developing
countries (i.e. roughing or gravel filtration). To this end, the research
programme will involve the testing of novel configurations and materials,
coupled with a detailed study of the contaminant removal mechanisms in order
to better characterise and enhance treatment efficiencies.
