If you're just talking about distributing a 1.6 JRE to users, it
shouldn't have any effect on me, since I can continue to develop
in 1.4 and distribute a 1.4-compatible jar file for non-starlink
users. I don't expect any backward compatibility issues.

That sounds to me like a separate question. I agree that 1.4 is
getting quite old; maybe we could if you have a reason for wanting to.
However, I'd be wary of going straight to 1.6, especially as Tim says
there may be Mac users which that would exclude.
