MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWS CAN SET BACK PATIENTS COMMITTED TO CHANGE
Motivational interviews are not universally beneficial or at worst neutral; sometimes they make
things worse. In this US study they helped ambivalent patients make the most of their treatment, but
impeded the recovery of those already committed to change.

A&E UNIT CUTS FUTURE WORKLOAD THROUGH BRIEF ALCOHOL INTERVENTIONS
Latest in a series of studies at a London emergency unit found drinking reductions and reduced
re-attendance after referring heavy drinkers for brief counselling. Screening and referral were
routine at the unit, suggesting the model could be widely implemented.

Two new analyses agree that despite relapse to drug use and imperfect adherence to a demanding

LOCAL ENVIRONMENT BENEFITS FROM INJECTING ROOM
Reducing the offence caused by public injecting and related litter is a key motivation for
supervised injecting facilities, but one rarely subject to scientific scrutiny. This Canadian study
established that these benefits really can materialise.
