Dear George,
SPM is not really designed to operate without a display. However, I have
submitted a change for the next set of updates that should improve this.
Once the updates are published, you can then set
defaults.cmdline = true
and SPM should not open the Menu and Interactive windows anymore. In
command line mode, you can run most of SPM without any display (e.g. by
running matlab -nodisplay). Those routines that really need user
interactions in the GUI will not work, of course (e.g. results section,
anything that creates custom uicontrol()s etc).
