The Scottish Poverty Information Unit have produced this conference. All are
welcome!
Climate change, housing and fuel poverty are key political issues. But do we
know how to provide affordable housing which simultaneously accords with the
Government’s climate change targets? Examples that meet these competing
needs are hard to find. In particular, combining zero tolerance for fuel
poverty with carbon emission goals and measures to end sick homes is easier
said than done.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS INCLUDE:
Professor Richard Wilkinson’s groundbreaking book, The Spirit Level
demonstrates how modern social and environmental problems are associated
with social inequality. Richard will examine the links between structural
inequalities and climate change. Gallus Cadonau is director of the Swiss
Solar Agency which promotes solar energy and awards the annual Swiss Solar
Prize for excellence in solar installations. Professor Colin Porteous is an
architect and academic with a long research involvement in tackling
environmental problems associated with housing. His prime concern has been
to tackle fuel poverty by means of renewable, low-carbon solution. Cathy
McCormick (author, The Wee Yellow Butterfly) has a long history in
anti-poverty and campaigns for better housing conditions. She will discuss
the health impacts of poor housing and fuel poverty.
