ESRC CASE ‘1+3’ Studentship in Socio-Legal Studies
Citizens Advice Located in Health Services: An Investigation
The School of Law at the University of Bristol and Bristol Citizens’ Advice
Bureau (CAB) are offering an Economic and Social Research Council
collaborative studentship (CASE) in socio-legal studies starting in October
2009. CASE studentships offer an opportunity to bridge the gap between
theory and practice by explicitly linking PhD research to on-going work in
a partner organisation. Bristol CAB is an independent charity which
provides free, confidential and impartial advice on any subject. It aims to
ensure that individuals do not suffer through lack of knowledge of their
rights and responsibilities or of the services available to them or through
an inability to express their needs effectively and equally to exercise a
responsible influence on the development of social policies and services.
The studentship is a ‘1+3’ scholarship. It will fund study on the Law
School’s MSc in Socio-Legal Studies, followed by 3 years of doctoral
research. The principal aim of the research is to understand the ways in
which providing advice in health care location enhances and empowers
potentially excluded communities and tackles poverty.
The MSc in Socio-Legal Studies offers a comprehensive training in social
science research methods and socio-legal methods and theory. We welcome
applications from suitably qualified candidates (first or upper second
class honours degree or equivalent in law, social sciences or humanities).
Relevant work experience and/or a demonstrable interest in social policy
and anti-poverty practice would be desirable. Please include relevant
details in the personal statement in the application form.
Further particulars on the studentship including a project summary and
eligibility conditions can be found here. Enquiries can be made to:
[log in to unmask] or Tel: 0117 954 5225 who can provide more detailed
information regarding the proposed project and CASE studentships. The
principal supervisor for the project will be Dr Morag McDermont (School of
Law) with further supervisory support based within the School for Policy
Studies and the Townsend Centre for International Poverty Research.
The deadline for applications is 5.30pm on 15 June 2009, with interviews
for short-listed candidates on 23 June 2009. A downloadable application
form is available here.
Please submit, with the completed application form, a research proposal as
detailed in the further particulars. References and proof of qualifications
will also be required. Please send completed application forms, quoting
