Today's "The Times" Archeology Notebook has a note re the origin of
the place name Pook, it refers to Kipling's "1906 book book of
historical tales" and the note is accompanied by a copy (slightly
cropped, as in the NRG) of Millar's first illustration in the Puck
volume. The note is derived from an article "Deer in Sussex
Place-Names" by Carole Hough of Univ of Glasgow in "The Antiquaries
Journal" 88, pp 43-77 [available online but apparently at a cost],
and suggests derivation from the OE for deer rather than goblin.
