I teach FAW and take a rather pragmatic approach and would suggest that it
depends on the circumstances and organisational policy.
The organisation may have a policy which requires a first aider to attend
hospital with any casualty (not a good policy in my view). If there is no
such policy in operation then:
A 999 call - ambulance transfer - NO
A minor injury eg a small wound requiring a small number of sutures NO
A possible fractured wrist - NO
Where the individual has an injury such as one affecting their ankle which
requires an assessment in A&E in order to rule out a possible fracture the
casualty may need assistance to get from a Taxi to A&E. The escort (not
necessarily a first aider) can assist them at the destination by getting a
wheelchair.
It is worth remembering that most FAW trainers have no health care
qualifications - they only hold a FA qualification (plus a basic teaching
qualification /experience) themselves.
