Hi Jessica
I was very interested in the way the St Aubyn herbarium is laid out, because
the style resembles a herbarium I worked on in Ipswich museum, the Notcutt
collection. It was made by John Notcutt between 1790 and I think 1812. It was
all collected from the Ipswich area and there are detailed descriptions of the
locations the plants came from and detail of the flowering season and habitat.
Each sheet is gatefold with the plant on the right hand side and the
description on the left.
Ipswich is not far from Saffron Walden and there were quite a few connections
with Cambridge University, particularly later in the 19th century.
I wonder of Notcutt and St Aubyn ever met or had mutual acquaintances
Do you know if this style of herbarium is common at the time
