Hi Bernard: The “List of 800 Mines” has numerous inaccuracies regarding the
Devon information. I have spent many hours cross-referencing them and have
conflicting information. As I know the person who compiled this list, and the
guess-work that was included I take it very lightly, and do not use the list as
I’ve compiled my own “Gazetteer” of Devon’s mines.
The List of mines was put together in the 1990s and used the local books like
Dines, Hamilton Jenkin’s etc. Where no NGR was given was where the guess
work came in. A number of the mines listed have the mineral symbols inserted
against the listing that are incorrect. I have found no reference to quite a
number of the listed minerals supposedly worked. I have checked a huge
amount of the Mining Journals and the local Brooke Index, along with Public
Record Office documents.
I suppose that the “List” can be acceptable to people, but, to me who is
compiling a list of Devon Mines, that stands well over 1800 at the present
time, it does not come into the equation due to the numerous errors.
Bernard, you know that if you require any information on Devon Mines I am
more than willing to assist you where I can.
Kindest regards Chris Kelland.
