Dear colleagues
I would be grateful if you would circulate the full time, funded, three year
PhD studentship opportunity described below, to people who may be
interested.
Clive Seale
PhD Studentship
Centre for Health Sciences
Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry
Queen Mary, University of London
Project Title: The public face of prostate cancer in the UK
Supervisor: Professor Clive Seale
Co-Supervisor: Dr Moira Kelly
A graduate with experience and interest in social and cultural aspects of
health and illness, with at least an upper second class honours degree, or a
lower second class honours degree plus a master’s degree in a relevant
discipline, is required for this project based at the Centre for Health
Sciences, Whitechapel, to commence in October 2009.
This study will apply Health Social Movements (HSM) theory to UK Prostate
Cancer awareness-raising activity. The purpose is to derive principles from
past and current experience to guide future strategies for organisations
involved in the UK prostate cancer HSM. This work comprises:
(a) Comparative study of media: This will assess changes over time in mass
media (newspaper and internet) representations of prostate cancer, and in
policy documents produced (i) by governmental and NHS sources and (ii)
prostate cancer awareness-raising organisations. (media analysis is likely
to draw on ‘keyword analysis’ which involves computer-assisted methods
derived from linguistics)
(b) Focus group work: This will involve men with prostate cancer and
intimate family members, to assess the degree to which the collective
identity ‘offered’ to men through media and policy discourse is incorporated
into personal biographical experience (known as ‘frame alignment’ within the
cultural framing approach to HSMs).
(c) Interviews with key people in the prostate cancer social movement: This
will be based on a snowball sample of interviews with key people in relevant
organisations, using resource mobilisation and ‘political opportunities’
perspectives within HSM theory to assess strategies pursued in the UK over
the past 20 years.
The Centre was rated fourth in the UK in health services research in the
2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The successful applicant will have
extensive training opportunities both in research and the methods used for
the study, as appropriate. The Centre currently hosts 14 PhD students
across of range of disciplines within community health sciences.
