We've recently had requests for subtitled versions of tv programmes from
a couple of members teaching staff.
These staff have found programmes which are already held in our DVD
collection (having previously been recorded off-air without subtitles)
and have asked us to get subtitled versions so that they can use them in
their teaching of classes which include deaf or hard of hearing
learners.
The ability to satisfy these requests (with our current resources) seems
to be limited in most cases to:
1. If the programme was broadcast via Sign Zone (i.e. BBC only), it's
normally possible to request the Sign Zone version via the BUFVC off-air
back up recording service. This relies on the learner being able to read
sign language. The person I spoke to at the BUFVC said that it's not
currently possible to request subtitled versions of programmes which
have been previously broadcast.
2. Wait for a repeat of the programme and record again with
subtitles.......
Plus, we can set our current dvd recorders to record everything with
subtitles on (but we don't think a whole DVD collection subtitled would
be popular) or subtitles off. There's not an option to set the recorder
to record an individual programme with subtitles.
We're conscious of DDA requirements. I've also discovered that the
Learning On Screen Conference in April this year (which I didn't go to)
was themed 'Disability and Access to Moving Image and Sound'.
Recording equipment set ups will no doubt vary but any suggestions would
be good - has anyone else had these problems? If so, can anyone suggest
solutions (processes, equipment, back up services, further info etc)?
Thanks,
Daniel
