Two members of Worcester College of Technology's Study centre team went into a local secondary school to do 2 sessions on evaluating internet sites with year 11s. The school does not have a sixth form and several of the students are due to go to WCT in September, so it was a nice introduction for them to our Study Centres as well. The Study Centre staff were invited in by the school librarian and the classes took place as part of their PSHE curriculum. The WCT staff discussed what the students thought about the web in general as a source of information, then went on to look at 8 sites, in groups, all of which were spoof - although the students weren't told this. They evaluated the sites and fed back to the class, then the Study Centre staff pointed out that the sites were spoof and demonstrated how you could tell. Mostly the students were very surprised and hadn't realised that the internet has sites that looked real but aren't. (One student was disappointed that he couldn't really send his dog to live out his life in freedom on "Dog Island"!)
It was only an introduction, a first step towards better info literacy, but it was done in a fun and interesting way and will hopefully open the way for further skills training once they arrive at their next educational establishment.
