The supply side responses which have underpinned labour market policies in the last twenty years are currently being tested by the global recession. A fresh debate is required to tackle the challenge of mass unemployment. This one day conference will seek to promote a fundamental rethinking of approaches to labour market policy, providing a unique opportunity to engage in a public discussion about demand side approaches with a range of stakeholders including employers and employees organisations, public sector organisations and the academic community. Speakers will provide an international perspective on the economic crisis and its impact on labour market policies, a perspective which is often found wanting in public debates in the UK.
Presentations and discussions will cover major themes such as:
a. Reconsidering the demand side agenda: the UK in comparative perspective;
b. Keeping people in employment and engaging employers;
c. The way ahead
This will open up debate about labour market policies in Europe and the UK and what type of policy response is needed to tackle the economic crisis.
