PhD Title: A palaeoecological approach to understanding the impact of coastal change on past societies
Supervisors: Dr Ralph Fyfe and Professor Dan Charman (University of
Plymouth)
Project Description: The PhD will focus on societal responses to
environmental stress in coastal regions. Relative sea-level rise has been a
key factor influencing location and subsistence strategies of communities
throughout the Holocene. The drowning of extensive low lying areas in the
North Sea during the early Holocene and inundation of low-lying coastal
wetlands would have displaced communities and led to changes in subsistence
strategies as a result of loss or alteration of coastal ecosystems and
resources. Island populations would have been more sensitive to coastal
change owing to constraints on the extent and viability of the terrestrial
resource base. This project will explore the impact of past coastal change
on island populations, using the Isles of Scilly as a case study area. The
project will develop palaeogeographical and archaeological mapping for the
Scillies and produce palaeoecological reconstructions which characterise
changing land use and subsistence strategies from onshore, inter-tidal and
submerged sections. The PhD will be collaborative with the associated
EH-funded Lyonesse project, providing external collaboration and
opportunities for industry-based personal development.
For further information or an informal discussion on the project, please

would have to cover the difference (approximately £6,600 per annum) between
the Home/EU tuition fee and the tuition fee for an overseas student.
Applicants should send a CV, a letter detailing their suitability for the
post as well as contact details of two academic referees (who we may
approach) to Ann Treeby, Faculty of Science Research Office, Room A504,
Portland Square, Plymouth PL4 8AA or email [log in to unmask]
