Kevin Bales and Jody Sarich are currently writing a book about forced
marriage around the world. Kevin Bales is the leading expert in modern
slavery and human trafficking and President of Free the Slaves in
Washington. Jody Sarich's background is in the study of domestic forms
of servitude in Africa.
They wish to illustrate the larger global problem of forced marriage and
to identify leaders in the fight to gain protections for these
survivors, with an eye toward promoting real change in US policy and
international law. To this end, a large part of the research will
concentrate on forced marriage in the context of asylum claims. They are
looking for anyone who has represented survivors of forced marriage,
whether or not the ultimate claim was made on that basis. They hope to
gain insight into how courts and agencies have responded to these claims
and also to learn more about the varied forms that forced marriage can
take through studying survivors' experiences. Their research so far
indicates that there may be hundreds of asylum claims filed on the basis
of forced marriage, and they are hoping to be in contact with as many
lawyers/paralegals as possible who helped these women through the asylum
process.
If you have represented a survivor of forced marriage, or can refer them
to someone who has, please contact Jody Sarich directly at
