Many thanks for your responses, I'll definitely follow them up.
I think Larry's point about 'literacy' being a anomalous term is valid. One issue with the 'health
literacy concept is that it is seen as an attribute (usually a deficit) in the service user who does not
have 'enough' health literacy, rather than a failing of the healthcare system which is confusing and
bad at communicating. However, I do think it would be a good idea for healthworkers to take time
for find out what service users know and what skills they have before launching into their
interventions.
I'd be delighted to hear any thoughts other people might have.
