Subject: OII News [2009.05.07]: New Fellows / NAO Report / Trust
Dear friends and colleagues,
We are pleased to be welcoming two new Research Fellows to the OII in October: Dr Mark Graham (Trinity College, Dublin) and Greg Taylor (University of Southampton). Mark's research centres on the economic, social and spatial effects of technology, and Greg's focuses on the microeconomics of marketplaces that exist on, or are mediated by the Internet. Both candidates complement our current faculty, building on and extending our existing research areas, such as into international development and the economics of information.
Forthcoming events at the OII will be covering a wide range of topics, including globalisation, urban planning, blogging, artificial Learning Companions, social networking and intellectual property rights (see Events Diary). The OII/SCL 'Internet, Law and Society' Lecture Series continues with Jonathan Zittrain (19 May) on 'The Future of the Internet: Private Sheriffs in Cyberspace' and Daniel J. Solove (25 June) on 'The Future of Reputation: Gossip, Rumor, and Privacy on the Internet' .. both to be held in London. Responses to these lectures will be invited from lawyers and social scientists in order to offer a broad range of perspectives. Audience discussions will follow.
We are also pleased to announce that renowned economist Hal Varian (UC Berkeley, but currently serving as Chief Economist at Google) will be giving a lecture at the OII on 23 June 2009: more details to follow.
Best wishes,
Bill Dutton
Director

2. New NAO Report: Communicating with Customers
--------------------------------------------------
The National Audit Office (NAO) has today published a report on information exchange in benefits delivery: Department for Work and Pensions: Communicating with Customers, produced by a joint OII-LSE research team led by Professors Helen Margetts (OII) and Patrick Dunleavy (LSE).
Dept for Work and Pensions: Communicating with Customers
http://www.nao.org.uk/publications/0809/communicating_with_customers.aspx
The report found that while the Department has significantly changed the way in which it provides information in recent years, with a growth in the use of telephone and the Internet, there is still progress to be made in moving services online.
Professor Helen Margetts said: "The Department could do more to capitalise on the potential of the Internet. It is not yet possible to apply for most benefits on-line and only 0.2 per cent of all citizen contacts are made electronically, even though 38 per cent of DWP customers are enthusiastic about online services. Benefits-related information is now provided via the Directgov website, but users taking part in experiments run at the Oxford Internet Institute found information in some areas difficult to find."

3. Trust 2009 Conference Keynote Webcasts
--------------------------------------------------
How do we build trustworthy hardware, and how can we use that to increase the trustworthiness of broader distributed computation? In two Keynote talks from the recent TRUST 2009 Conference, Professors Eugene H. Spafford and Sean Smith question some assumptions related to computer architecture, the definitions of security, and how best to build trusted systems:
