Cultural Geography in Groningen/
Research within the Cultural Geography Department focuses on the subject
‘meaning of place’, more specifically the ‘Geography of Belonging and
Identity’. This issue is being explored from various perspectives, such
as rural identity, heritage, gender and regional development. In terms
of teaching, the specialization area developed into a fully fledged and
successful Master’s program in Cultural Geography. Teaching and research
in the Cultural Geography Department make use of both qualitative and
quantitative methods, and are by no means averse to unorthodox audio and
video techniques. While some of the research corresponds with the
Anglo-Saxon approach, which has a strong conceptual orientation, other
branches are deeply rooted in the Dutch, empirical tradition, and
demonstrate a relatively stronger quantitative point of departure.
