Dear Colleagues,
I'm currently organising a session on 19th-century British material culture
studies for the 2010 Society for Historical Archaeology conference, to be held
in early January on Amelia Island, Florida (near Jacksonville).
The session is designed to share with, and publicise to, our international
colleagues (particularly those in North America), the growing body of varied
and exciting British work on 19th-century material culture. For the purposes
of this session, '19th-century' is defined as c.1750-c.1950 so long as there's
some 19th-century element included in the paper; it's my hope that this will
encourage some contributions that address continuity from the 18th and/or
into the 20th centuries. I also welcome papers from colleagues working in
Ireland, and would change the title and emphasis of the session accordingly if
any are forthcoming.
I'm actively looking to include as broad a range of topics as possible, so don't
intend to be too prescriptive as regards content. However, I would prefer
papers that contain an interpretive - rather than solely descriptive - element.
I'll be acting as session chair, and Dr. James Symonds (Sheffield University)
will be acting as session discussant. I already have a number of papers for
the session, but still have space to include further contributions from CHAT list
members. There is, perhaps inevitably, a heavy emphasis on urban sites in
the current list of papers, so I would particularly welcome contributions from
non-urban contexts. The first (less expensive) submission deadline is 15 June.
Please feel free to contact me (see sigfile below) if you have any further
questions, particularly as regards costs and the logistics of reaching Amelia
Island in early January. I can at least almost certainly guarantee potential
participants far better weather for January in Florida than should be the case
in either Britain or Ireland!
Please feel free to forward this call for papers to other potentially-interested
individuals who may not subscribe to the CHAT list.
Sincerely yours,
Alasdair Brooks
PS - note that I'm typically only available at the phone number listed below on
Monday and Friday. I can also be reached at 01279 506498 if you'd like to
discuss the session via telephone.
